For me, making art is an opportunity to be completely immersed in the present moment. So much so that time becomes almost irrelevant as I become absorbed within the process.
I liken my praxis to that of relationships... mine, ours and yours, both within and out in the world. Trying to mitigate potential problems by the laying down of a perfect foundation (although nothing can ever be perfect!), and then applying learnt strategies and skills just as we do in every day life for optimum results; only to have to give them up at times and surrender when they no longer work for the situation; then finding another way.
Knowledge and understanding of the materials, fluctuating viscosities, environmental conditions and my own state of being contributes to the process. Gathering information, watching and waiting, leading and following, and moments of letting go, move me onward to a conclusion. A dialogue and a performance is captured; fluid but fixed in time, an exchange and a form of transformation.
Words like bodily, visceral, organic, nature, primordial, organic, effortless... have been used to describe my paintings. I am content to leave meaning and interpretation to the viewer rather than providing an explicit message via representation. Unanswered questions are good.
