Fine Arts Whanganui 2022 Young Artist Scholarship
Nat Kirk
Wisdom, the profound understanding that knowledge holds greater value than gold, serves as the guiding principle
behind my works.
I am currently studying towards a Bachelor degree in Art and Design at the Nelson -Marlborough Institute of Technology.
While exploring various mediums such as graphic design, photography, and graphite, I have always found myself drawn back to the expressive power of graphite.
This humble medium possesses the remarkable ability to capture the depth and raw essence of a subject, allowing me to create artwork that speaks volumes through its simplicity.
My fascination with light and shadow has been a constant thread throughout my artistic exploration. As Leonardo da Vinci once stated,“Shadow is the means by which bodies display their form, and it is through light and shadow that the intricacies of the human form are revealed.”
Just as light shapes us physically, I believe that Christ, as the light of the world, shapes us spiritually. In John 8:12, Christ proclaims, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life." His sacrificial death on the cross exposes our sins to the light, offering us the opportunity to embrace His divine guidance and find true illumination.
Wisdom surpasses the worth of any material possessions. It states that the value of wisdom is of far greater value than silver or gold. True happiness is found in the discovery of wisdom, for wealth without wisdom is a life devoid of meaning.

Fine Arts Whanganui Gallery 2021 Young Artist Scholarship
Fine Arts Whanganui Gallery 2020 Young Artist Scholarship
'A Lovely Sunny Day' by Grace Swanston, the winner of the 2020 Young Artist Scholarship Award
A very successful Young Artists Scholarship in December 2020 drew eleven young artists from the local region. The entries this year gained compliments from the judges, Sietske Jansma and Anique Jayasinghe, who said they found the quality of the overall entrants this year to be the best that had turned out when compared with entries in previous Young Artist Scholarship exhibitions.
The winner of the Young Artist Scholarship of $1000 and the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition in Fine Arts Whanganui Gallery in June 2021, was Grace Swanston who submitted a portfolio of watercolours themed as a result of Grace's concern for the current state of the environment. The judges mentioned her skillful use of watercolour and praised the consistent standard of the work in her portfolio.
The Young Artist Scholarship Award Certificate and cheque for $1000 was presented by Craig Hooker, the Chairman of Fine Arts Whanganui.
Three Distinction Certificates were awarded to Ani Latus (oil painter), Zoe Bracegirdle (photographer) and Stella Howe (printmaker). The judges told the audience at the opening of the exhibition, that the decisions needed to separate the winner from these three Distinction recipients had been difficult. The standard achieved by these four very talented artists was exceptional.
We now look forward to Grace Swanston's solo exhibition at our Gallery in June/July 2021.
People's Choice Award
The public are invited to vote for their favourite work from the framed works provided by each artist. They also have access to the artists portfolios, which are on display in the gallery for the period of the exhibition. The votes are counted and the winner of the People's Choice Award is announced at the prizegiving evening in the Gallery, at the end of the exhibition.
The winner of the People's Choice Award was Zoe Bracegirdle. Her certificate and prize of $200 was presented by Renata Szarvas of Renata's Art & Framing, who provide the sponsorship for this award.

Young Artists Scholarship finalists exhibit at Bricksticks, March 2019
Chantelle de Koning, Alison Edwards (at back) and Lily Claypole exhibit their art work beside one of the former brick kilns at Bricksticks.
During the last two weekends of March, Whanganui artists open their studios to allow the public to see them working in their own creative spaces. These Artists Open Studios weekends draw large crowds wanting to meet the artists as they visit studios and view their work. Fine Arts Whanganui invited the ten finalists in the Young Artists Scholarship 2018 to come together and mount an exhibition of their work at Bricksticks in Georgetti Road, Whanganui.
Bricksticks is a former brick works where Greg Betts manufactures bespoke wooden furniture. Many of the rooms are former kilns and brickmaking areas that possess their own remarkable atmosphere which is not able to be created outside a brick making site. The Young Artist Scholarship finalists were encouraged to bring prints and cards of their art to display alongside the original art work, in order to create multiple purchasing choices. The large crowds that regularly visit Bricksticks during these weekends, allow the young artists to experience the rewards of showing work to the public and of meeting potential purchasers as they visit Bricksticks. It is a great opportunity for them to gain some exposure to the commercial side of producing their art, in a venue that always attracts good support from visitors to Whanganui's Artist's Open Studios Weekends.
Fine Arts Whanganui hopes these young artists have enjoyed the experience of 'jumping in at the deep end' and is very grateful to Greg Betts and Bricksticks for making such wonderful gallery spaces available for our finalists to inhabit and show their work.
